Final Readings

For your final readings of Times of Change, I would like you to set aside some time on Monday (Memorial Day) to read the choices above. Once you are done, I would like for you to post in your blog a note to the men and women on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. After what you have learned over the past few days, and what you saw when we went to D.C., what would you want to say to them?

Wars are always worse in person than in reading. This was no exception, you went through horrible times and the enemy won out. I thank you for your service and your help to preserve freedom.

I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die Rag

This song by Country Joe and the Fish became one of the first protest songs of the Vietnam Era. Read the lyrics to the song, and then respond to the following:

What is the song asking the “big strong men to do”?

The song is asking men to join the army to fight in the war.

… the “generals” to do?

Asking the generals to lead the soldiers into battle and kill the Vietnamiese.

… “Wall Street” to do?

Asking them to spend money for the war effort, to supply money for aid.

… “mothers” to do?

Send your child off to the war before its too late.

Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or anti-war sentiment.

"Whoopee! we're all going to die"
"Be the first one on your block... To have your child come home in a box"
"Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb... They drop it on the Viet-Cong"
"Send 'em off before it's too late"

Jack Smith

What challenges does Jack Smith face as a soldier in Vietnam? (a bulleted list is fine)
  • He is unprepared for battle, the horrors of war, the death and destruction.
  • He is injured in battle.
  • He lost his friends in battle.

How does Smith’s attitude toward war change?

In the beginning, he was looking forward to joining the army. But as he found out that he would be sent into battle, his mood turned sour. After he spent time in combat, he saw the horrors of war and disliked being there.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

What is the main thesis of the essay?
The Tonkin resolution is controversial.

What was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution?
A request to congress to defend the interests in S.E. Asia.

What evidence does the author give to support his thesis?
He says that Johnson was a liar. He went against his word.

How does this link to the theme of the first reading, “A Dubious Crusade”?
That the conflict is still controversial and people are uncertain about the results.

History

What is the overall theme of Vuong-Riddick's poem?

It is telling about the specific bad things about the war, i.e. all the death and killing. Also gives an overview of the war.

A Dubious Crusade

Look up both words in the title of the short essay. What do they mean?

Dubious: giving rise to uncertainty, doubtful promise or outcome, unsettled in opinion, doubtful

Crusade: a remedial enterprise undertaken with zeal and enthusiasm

Relate the title to the reading. What is Warren saying? How do you think this will relate to the rest of our study if Vietnam?

It is saying that people still are uncertain about the outcome of the crusade. He is saying that Americans are unsure about the need for the war. It is still a controversial topic. Many people still find it a waste of human resources.

Has MLK's "dream" been realized?

Has MLK's "dream" been realized?
I found that there is still a big gap in income between the races.
In 1980:
The median Income for Whites was $18,684
The median Income for Blacks was $10,764
The median Income for Asians was N/A
Then in 1990:
The median Income for Whites was $31,231
The median Income for Blacks was $18,676

The median Income for Asians was $38,450
2000:
The median Income for Whites was $43,916
The median Income for Blacks was $29,667

The median Income for Asians was $55,757
2003:
The median Income for Whites was $45,631
The median Income for Blacks was $29,645

The median Income for Asians was $55,699

The average income for households in increasing, but at a different rate. Asian Americans have shown a large increase in the average income compared to other races.

Also the poverty rate for the different races was quite high.
In 2004:
The Poverty rate for Whites was 8%
The Poverty rate for Blacks was 25.6%

The poverty rate is decreasing but they also show a up and down trend in the data.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?
The author says for liberating them [whites] from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race.

Was King "the right man at the right time"?
He was the perfect fit for the job. He refused to use violence to defend his case. He used civil disobedience to achieve his goal.

Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?
No, he used it for all races and sexes. He didn't limit that phrase or quote to only African Americans, but directed it at all races, religions, and sexes.

Unit 8 Preview - After listening to the introduction to Unit 8, what are you looking forward to in history over the next few weeks?

Unit 8 Preview - After listening to the introduction to Unit 8, what are you looking forward to in history over the next few weeks?

I am looking forward to learning about the Vietnam War.

Would you have been able to use civil disobedience and non-violence?

Would you have been able to use civil disobedience and non-violence?

It would take a lot of patience and tolerance. For the movement to work, it would take a long time. As a student, it would be necessary to understand the possible punishments and consequences. It would also take a enormous amount of courage.
